Turkish Wedding Customs
If you’re attending a Turkish wedding for the first time you may encounter some of the traditional customs below.
Flag Planting
Before the wedding the groom participates in “flag-planting.” Male relatives and friends gather to pray together and plant the Turkish flag at the highest point near the couple’s home.
Bridal Tradition
Before departing the bride looks in the mirror to envision the road ahead. She then leaves by horse or car listening to Davul Zurna music and waving the Turkish flag, a gift from the groom.
Stepping On Feet
The bride and groom participates in a custom where they see who can step on each other’s feet first. The first person to do so is thought to have the last word in the marriage.
Reception Tradition
The bride ties a red ribbon around her and guests attach coins or money to it. She also writes the names of unmarried women on her shoe and the first one to rub off will marry next.
