A timeless BRITISH TRADITION

afternoon tea history

During the early 19th century as tea consumption soared, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, Anna, found herself complaining of a “having that sinking feeling” in the late afternoon. Back then it was typical for people to eat two meals a day, breakfast, and dinner at around 8 in the evening. Seeking a solution, the Duchess embraced a pot of tea and a light snack in her boudoir during the afternoon. This practice evolved into a social event at Woburn Abbey, where friends joined her. Back in London she continued the tradition, inviting friends for “tea and a walking the fields.” The trend caught on and today it remains a cherished occasional luxury for the British and those visiting.

Afternoon Tea FAQs

A traditional Afternoon Tea menu incorporates light cakes, scones, and sandwiches. The finger sandwiches typically have the crusts removed and can feature popular fillings like smoked salmon and egg mayonnaise. Complementing these delectable sweet and savoury treats is a selection of fine teas. For those celebrating a special occasion, some choose to enhance the experience by adding a glass of bubbly!

Afternoon Tea is a unique experience and is typically savoured for a minimum of 1.5 to 2 hours.

Afternoon tea is a distinctly British tradition introduced by Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, in the 19th century.

Surprisingly, there is a proper sequence for enjoying your afternoon tea. It consists of three courses. Start with the sandwiches, followed by the scones, and finish with the cakes – all accompanied by sipping your tea. However, feel free to enjoy it in your preferred manner.
